My draft notice arrived in the mail on a cold Idaho winter day at the beginning of 1968. During the Army induction process that spring, they sat us all down in a classroom to fill out paper work and listen to one of the induction center officers go over everything. At some point while we were sitting in that room an officer come in and said they were looking for one person to volunteer for the Marine Corp. No one in the room raised their hand, the last thing I wanted to do was volunteer to be a Marine. The officer left and came back a while later and read off five names, my name was one of them. They asked if there was anyone among us five that wanted to volunteer. Again, nobody raised their hand. The officer again left and returned with just two names, one of them was mine. Neither of us last two guys volunteered. The officer said that he would be back with the name of the person that would be volunteering. Needless to say I was sweating bullets until the officer came back and volunteered the other guy for the Marines. One away from being a Marine! Semper Fi!
