LOH Helicopter at fire base

LOH helicopter at fire base to pick up officer.

I took this picture of a LOH helicopter on a fire base landing zone as it waited for a officer to board.  These helicopters were used to ferry officers, as well as for observation and inspection patrols.  We would see them on occasion, buzzing around like hummingbirds.  As a matter of fact I think I called them by that name.

I was 22 years old, a young enginer and worked on this helicopeter program at its early stage for Hughes tool program, I was so lucky to have been there. Hired by Harvey Nay and and accepted as a young engineer. I also worked with Mr. Crabtree who was working as an weight engineer for Howad Huges on the Spruce Goose.

Hi Jery, Thanks for your reply. I saw a few of the LOH’s buzzing around. The 101st Airborne used them a lot for transporting officers around and as C & C (Command and Control) aircraft. I know our battalion commander, Col. Honeycutt, used one as a C&C ship during the Hamburger Hill conflict. I remember hearing his helicopter flying over the top of Dong Ap Bia during the battle. I hope to hear from you again. Woody

I was a cook with the 4th Infantry Battalion in Pleiku, “Bamby-Tooey”, and Khotum 1968-1969. I was in a “fortified forward position” with several Cobras and a LOH attached. A few lucky guys got to go on a ride with with the LOH pilot when he’d go out on observation. They said he was a crazy guy, flying high speed BELOW the tree tops, weaving between the trees, for the purpose of avoiding getting shot at. I remember seeing him approaching the base, screaming along making 90 degree turns right at tree-top level, then dropping down fast to the ground. I always wished I could fly one of those buzzing guppies.
